Beast of Reincarnation launched on August 4, 2026, and the single most useful thing anyone can tell you before you start is this: the way the parry system actually works is not what the previews made it sound like.
Game Freak made it. Yes, that Game Freak. The studio that has been shipping Pokémon games since Red and Blue hit Japan in 1996. Beast of Reincarnation is their first original AAA action RPG, directed by Kota Furushima, who spent years on Pokémon's battle system and sound design. It is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with day-one access on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Thirty Years Between Original IPs
Before getting into the game itself, the context matters. Game Freak's last non-Pokémon title was Drill Dozer in 2005 on the Game Boy Advance, a one-off they released between Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen and Diamond/Pearl. Before that, Pulseman in 1994. The studio is not incapable of making other games. They simply haven't needed to for a very long time.
Beast of Reincarnation is a different kind of departure. This is not a Game Boy Advance action game shipped as a side project between mainline entries. It is a full-budget, multi-platform action RPG set in a richly built original world, aimed at an audience with no Pokémon connection required.
The studio's non-Pokémon timeline, for reference:
