The most imitated difficulty curve in arcade history was never designed. Nobody wrote code for it. When Tomohiro Nishikado finished Space Invaders in 1978, the feature that would define the game's tension was a side effect he discovered during testing and decided to leave alone.
That decision shaped forty-seven years of games.
What Nishikado Was Actually Building
In 1977, Taito commissioned Nishikado to create a shooting game. The brief was simple: shoot things. Nishikado, who had spent years developing mechanical arcade games, wanted something that felt threatening. He designed a grid of invaders -- five rows of eleven, 55 targets in total -- that marched sideways in formation while you scrambled to clear them from below.
The hardware he built around was the Intel 8080, a 2 MHz processor he had first seen in action in Gun Fight (1975), the earliest arcade game to use a microprocessor. He was impressed enough to base his own hardware around it, spending close to a year developing custom circuitry because nothing commercially available could render what he had in mind.
What he didn't anticipate was how the chip would behave under load.
When a Processor Runs Out of Breath
At full formation, the Intel 8080 had to calculate the position and animation state of all 55 sprites simultaneously, every single frame. The processor was operating near its ceiling. The aliens moved slowly and deliberately not because Nishikado wanted them to, but because that was the fastest the hardware could manage with a full screen of objects to track.
